Amazing Field Trips

What about getting out and about? When you are just at a loss as to how to bring things alive, they even have field trips built in to the lessons. So if you aren’t sure where to go or what to do, they have lots of fabulous ideas.

And don’t forget the field trip report. A great reminder of what was learned.  It’s a great way to track those questions that come up along the way. Some time ago we actually tried to make a point of journalling our time out and about .  The format CWS uses for field trips was a wonderful reminder for us to begin this again.

Another aspect of the curriculum that we are enjoying is the field trip ideas.  One of the suggestions is camping trips, so we took the kids camping and hiking thru nearby Red Rock Canyon State Park.  The kids had a great time observing the flora and fauna of the area and looking at the geology of the area.  We will also be using a visit to Yosemite National Park, Griffith Observatory and the Museum of Natural History as other field trip ideas that the website suggests.

There are some great field trip ideas that they offer. We decided to go on a trip to learn about birds and manatees while we were on spring break. It was very fun and was in keeping with what we were studying. We read some of the books that were included and then decided to find out more about the birds in the region where we were visiting. We learned about osprey and even saw some babies in the nest. YAY!

I love the field trip page because it gives sooooooo many ideas for field trips. It gives even ideas where you can incorporate what you are already doing. For example, we are a huge scouting family, which of course means that we…. camp (duh). So it is easy to incorporate learning into something we already do! And honestly, with my kids fighting me about small things these days, this is a huge benefit.

They encourage students to share what field trips they go on so they can build a data-base of ideas for all the students to work from.

Another section of CrossWired Science that we want to explore further is the field trip suggestions. They have over 40 suggestions in their field trip section. Camping, digging for dinosaur bones and a planetarium trip were just some of the ones that caught our attention.
